So this weekend I am gearing up and finishing the rest of the paper goodies for Brianna and Brandon's wedding and thought it was finally time to share! The wedding is coming up in 6 days! Anyways, Brianna and I have been discussing for quite a long time about wedding invites and I had the pleasuring of designing hers. I am very pleased with the final product and can't wait to do more invites today. Its very fun to use my own personal design style and meld it with the brides to create something very unique.

Ok... So I know it has been since October, but get over it! Lots has changed in my life and the thing that matters is that I have tons of items in the works; adventures, projects, and posts.

The quick update. I have a new job (it rocks), I have lots of new found freedom (which includes lots of skiing), I have a MEGA surprise coming (stay tuned in april/may-ish), I have redesigned my studio space (totally organized now) and lastly... Life is good, live in the moment, and don't worry about the past.

Anyway, I will be posting more, so please, check back more often - because I promise I will post more than every 5 months. All I can say, is although I have been M.I.A. -

Chronicle Books Fellowship - RD2

Long long ago - aka when I stopped blogging in October... I kinda went on hiatus aka design mega over drive for a while. I worked on revamping a bunch of projects, pumping out a few new ones and dreaming up all sorts of crazy, like this box of goodness. I really don't have to much to say, because I DID NOT get the fellowship. However I am very very proud of how this portfolio turned out. It is a vast improvement from my 1st portfolio from when I graduated from Cal Poly and as much as I liked the outside of my 1st Chronicle submission "the guts" just don't stand up to this new portfolio seen in this new post.

The portfolio itself was done in the standard amount of time, roughly 3 weeks, because why plan ahead and give yourself a ton of time?!? Actually, it's because I just thought I would give it a shot one last time... I had tried in June and thought maybe they would remember me and see some improvements, which I fully believe it shows, my book has come far. The layout was similar but I worked on my hierarchy, order of projects (I had about 4 more editorial projects than the 1st time around), and uniqueness of presentation. Overall, my idea kept kept coming back to having a game board that included elements from all my projects. The final game board turned into my route/path to Chronicle... too bad that didn't actually work out. (The dice didn't roll in my favor?) The board game was the fun part and won't really get used ever again (I am kinda done with that idea), but the process book and portfolio itself could be reused with some tweaks and changes. The process book is standard, but included more detailed descriptions about the projects, showing sketches, rounds, compared to the final piece. The portfolio style was something I had dreamed up for my first portfolio, but I could never find large enough paper, as silly as that sounds. The format however worked out perfectly for the "required 8.5x11 page size" - although I guess I cheated a little having fold out pages that were bigger than that. It's all about loop holes though, or so I figured. And maybe, there I was wrong.

Each project gives the title, one line description, and category on the left page. On the right side is a environmental photo of the project (this also may have been my down fall), that page then folds out to show details and spreads of the projects in many cases. There are a few little details that I created; for instance the tab system that is on the left side - in my signature green, green ribbon to make it easier to remove the books, the compartments in the bottom of the box that were designed specifically for the "Feeling Lucky" cards, game pieces and process book... I could go on and on, but really the pictures explain it all fairly well. If you have any interest of what projects I included or anything about creating this wondrous blue book please let me know - I am more than happy to share.

The Box: Included - Portfolio Book, Project List (required element, including short descriptions, completion dates, materials), Game Board, "Feeling Lucky" Cards: chance cards, Game Pieces + 1 Die, and Process Book

Things learned... which I should have known by now. You can never spell check enough (command + i : inDesign). Never rely on your own eyes, employ an editor or if you can't, call your Mom, like me! (Just don't do it after the fact!) So my down fall, I will never know, however being that Chronicle is a publisher, pretty sure my 3 spelling errors didn't help me one little bit (palm + forehead or as Homer would say... "Doh!")

All and all, it didn't matter in the long run. I went out on a limb and tried for the fellowship, didn't get it of course, but then was given the fabulous opportunity that I have now! I really love my new job (see my LinkedIn) and already have enjoyed learning new design tricks, oh and pixal/photoshop land isn't so scary after all.

so i have gotten into this re-design kick lately, i had some old projects i still kinda liked, but didn't really love. most recently i found my older files, and digging through, i came across "dusk 'til dawn" from the asi days. i have always been attached to the illustration, but the type, well, not so much. i had gotten many comments that it should be real writing and not a font to achieve that hand drawn look. i had always not liked that aspect much anyways, but many of the elements still worked. so i did some style research and font hunting which brought me to the final product as seen below. it looks a little crazy on the brick, but i kinda like the "slap as many posters up on the walls as you can in a day to advertise the circus is in town" vintage look, so its staying that way for now. it's an interesting vibe at least. anyways... ta da!

Pecha Kucha Night SLO

It's time to share. The ball is rolling and my mind is spinning. The date has been confirmed and I am now working quickly to prepare for :: Pecha Kucha Night SLO :: Volume 9 on Friday, November 13th @ Steynberg Gallery, San Luis Obispo, 1531 Monterey St. I have been really wanting to get involved in the SLO Art Community and I am finally getting a chance! I will be speaking about my senior project, and now on going project, "The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo". Most who know the project will be surprised because I am scrambling, it will get done, but I am adding a new component to the project. However, you will have to wait to find out, sorry. So mark your calendars, bring tons of friends, and please come support me! I only get 6 min 40 sec of fame, so it's short/sweet and completely scary/nerve-racking all at the same time. Wish me luck and let the countdown begin! This video has been making the rounds, but I just thought I would share anyways since you most likely don't read everything I read too. Recently this video from Justice for the remix of Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz was released. The video is very interesting because it is as if we missed the movie and now we are just seeing the end credits. It seems pretty lame until you begin to notice the characters interaction with the typography. He sets soda cans, hangs dry cleaning, and lastly smashes chunks of the type to smithereens with a baseball bat aka my favorite part. I didn't post the video to stay out of trouble so see the screen shots and make sure to check out the video from the posted link. Overall,l I am glad to see graphic design and typography especially being recognized and put on stay in our mainstream culture.

Yes, I have a thing for Type, but you already knew that. I have an even bigger thing for letterpress type, specifically really pretty woodblock type. I can't say these wood blocks are perfect however, the fonts and letter forms screamed out at me, leading to me purchasing way more letters than anticipated from :: Birds of a Feather :: in Cambria, CA. Don't worry friends I didn't buy all they had, although there were many more that I wanted, but my bank account wouldn't allow for that. So if you are up for an adventure I would make the trek and see if there are any letters calling your name. Just as a heads up, they are a bit pricey and none were really of print quality, but if you are just looking for some fun letters to hang out on your desk these will do the trick. As a side note, the shop owner informed me all the type had came from the Bakersfield Press. Hope you enjoy my fun weekend finds.

I just wanted to say thank you to the AIGA kids at Cal Poly for inviting me to " Design Brunch." It was very fun, because it was a little different now that I am an alum, still something I haven't completely come to terms with. The event was fabulous and there was a good amount of work. I was asked to bring my portfolio book/box to show. That was pretty funny because I haven't looked at it for a while and I already want to replace things. Oh the life of a growing design, it's a good thing!

The event today, reminded me of a meet up/group/nerd club thing I really want to have. Since after finding out who a few of my readers are, (thanks for reading design kids) I have a question to ask you my local designy friends... Would anyone like to participate in a monthly meet up to chat design, critique, give feedback, maybe do a impromptu small collaborative book/zine? Lets hear some interest or thoughts. Ready set comment.

For the record my life is not consumed by Twitter, although I do realize I mention it a lot lately. Its a communication tool, so get over it, it's here to stay. Plus it's not so bad when you receive fun packages because you won something via Twitter. As most people know I am a book nerd, yes, I even like the smell of a good old book with aged paper. With this interest naturally I follow @ChronicleBooks. Last week they mentioned if you retweet their tweet, you would be entered to win a poster for Pictoral Webster's. The message was a link for Give-Away they are having for one "a fine press edition" of the book.

This is how it works. I was really really sad I didn't have sufficient funds to travel to Memphis for the most awesomest (yes, I am making up words) conference aka Make/Think: AIGA. I even applied for Command X, wasn't picked though, but it was worth the try and I will be trying again someday. Can't even buy tickets at this point, but today I noticed (via @NeenahPaper) that Neenah Paper said they were giving away a ticket to the conference. The rules are as follows:

This past week has been a little crazy. As a side note, I got a tandem this weekend, and so now I am playing catching up on side projects and such. trendy: balloons

i wasn't sure if i would post this at first, but i changed my mind. it doesn't really fit my normal topics, however follows a trend i have noticed. while surfing channels about a month ago i stopped because pastel balloons caught my eye. then for 3 min i watched Kid Cudi (Feat. Kanye West & Common) - Make Her Say (I Poke Her Face) it had balloons, samples lady gaga (my current guilty pleasure, ahaha), and using a split screen to create simple, yet interesting affect with some scenes: stairs, pools, windows, etc. below are a few screen shots of the music video, hopefully i don't get in trouble? check out the video though, i impressed our friend Will because i had already seen the video. glad to know we have the same taste in some things. anyways enjoy the balloons and maybe you will notice them around more often now. they seem to always make you smile, brightens the day.

this post is long overdue. i have slacked at taking good photos of my portfolio case to feature because it is a piece in itself. the box was designed specifically to hold my portfolio book and samples of my work. it is import for me to carry some of my finished pieces, because many are books and show much better in person for proof of craft, typography,etc.

the box was quite the project. i made about 2 full practice boxes, originally having a drawer/sleeve for the book. this was later simplified to the shelf that was implemented in the finished product. i am very proud of the box, except for a few bubbles which sadly were caused by the box sitting in a hot car while our AIGA group was touring studios. no one noticed the bubbles except myself and charmaine, (which is why i was kicking myself for the bubbles) i knew she would notice. ugh. oh well more practice making elaborate boxes is good in the long run. i love this portfolio case and it worked perfect for my presentation at AIGA SF Portfolio Day. however, I think it will become much more sleek for the next time it's needed. i see a redesign in the future, which can only mean a better design.

making bogie stencil's

i have been bugging my awesome roommate Brian (@bman530 & author of freshasaurus) for a while to make me a stencil after seeing him make a present for his girlfriend. we decided on prints of Bogie. i have talked about Bogie before. he is my cute little longhair red dapple mini dachshund. a mouth full i know. the image we selected, although it doesn't highlight his recognizable characteristics, the smirk on his face shows his personality. the stencil was made in three layers, and after doing a test run, i encouraged brian to play with shading and so we began to make many prints-trading off on spraying layers. below are a few images, but head over to freshasaurus: bogie stencil for images of the process.

One of the perks of being an AIGA member is occasionally getting something fun in the mail. They do seem to be cutting back on the amount of paper used, because I haven't gotten any really oversized posters recently. I took a few snap shots of some of the spreads in the book the day I got it. Its AIGA SF's (@AIGA SF) 25th Anniversary Book. I was very grateful for the present, but I was a little disappointed with the design. Just felt it could have been a little more modern. The design did sorta fit the style of AIGA's font and such... sorta of a play of the brand and identity, at least thats the vibe i got, which wasn't a bad idea. so all and all i am happy. whenever i get something from AIGA, I do think of the 365. Ahhh thats the best gift of the whole year.

i stumbled across :sleeveface: some how, sorry i can't remember if somebody else told me, tyler already claims he's seen it. anyways who cares. just wanted to share because its got some great compositions which are centered around the use of vinyl record sleeves. i have a friend down the hall who has a ton of records, so we joked and maybe in the future might try and submit a few images, haha. i'll let you know if that ever happens. for now check out sleeveface.com

earlier in the year, around february i created an interesting piece in was a poster/framed collage of different color plastic bags cut into shapes and then melted together via use of a iron. trust me i had the thought, "this can't be to good for me, since the smell of burning plastic is kinda strange." oh well after a few experiments and about an hour of carefully ironing everything together... after way more practice than that.

well the point of this post however was to share some work from :Virginia Fleck: an artists from Austin, Texas. I posted a few of her images below but really please check out her site because her work is lovely. the prints and colors from so many bags inspired me to try this type of art for a class project. my piece resembled her work but my finished piece was a square and looked a lot more crinkled. i ironed a little long giving the work some bubbles and imperfections. it worked in the long run because the idea was to make it look more like trash trying to be beauty then giving it the full make over and turning into high art. anyways check out Ms. Fleck, I would love to see the work in person sometime to see the texture of the finished work.

p.s. if you want some help learning how to iron plastic grocery bags... i learned by reading this post. also i will try and find an image of my final piece. me digging up this link reminded me i never got it back after it was in the case, it was in there soo long, i don't even remember if or when it came down. woops. lets hope its still around.

so i have have a ton of links piling up and my new place to post (i will let you know when it lives) isn't ready yet, so i'm going to post a few here for the time being but they will move later, i think. anyways. let the fun begin. : the annotated weekender : is a blog that features only images from the : guardians weekend magazine :

the blog is a lovely mixture of illustrations on top of pages of the publication. the illustrations have such character. cute little monsters with big noses. my favorite of the moment is one of the newest posts of a pirate in the seas on soda can. there is much to see, a few babies with mustaches, sea monsters, birds, etc. so many fun posts, just makes me want to doodle all over my magazines now. would be a good use for all those old stacks of strange magazines (don't worry no dwell, real simple, print, how, or ID will be going in that pile) oh and i recommend checking thursday-ish for new posts, but there is always some fun surprises, seems to be the trick right now though. just check it out.

2009 AIGA Enrichment Scholarship

So, I never even really mentioned this because I have been slacking on posting pictures and talking about portfolio review. However, I just wanted to share since I just found a link that talked about it. On May 30th at AIGA SF Portfolio Day, I was awarded the AIGA Enrichment Scholarship for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I was super excited and I won money that I am holding on to in hopes of maybe attending SXSW (the web/design part) next year. If you want to read and get the complete details click for more info.

i bought real hosting. i wanted to be able to use word press and i couldn't do that using mobile me. currently, thats how ivegonegraphic.com is up and running. anyways hopefully by the end of the week i will have something up and running. i really don't have a choice, because i need to have a working website for portfolio class and what i have now needed some help. look for something "fresh" soon.

CP Portfolio Review.

Its been a blur of a last few days. They sorta all blend together, it was pretty much portfolio, portfolio, portfolio, but it all got done. Yesterday, was Cal Poly portfolio review which is mandatory if you plan to graduate and super helpful. I reviewed with 2 alums, both whom had good things to say, which was really exciting. I finally am feeling prepared and it's all coming together. So look out real world, i'm coming! Below are a few images of my portfolio, it is still def. a work in progress, but I think I am done with the layout and design. It is just down to getting the right pieces in there. I promise I will post all the spreads once I have locked in what is staying in there. I have 8 solid pieces right now, I had a couple more, but I am pulling a few after yesterday. They will be replaced before AIGA SF Portfolio review. They will be replaced with stuff that is in progress right now. Goal is to have 12 awesomely, amazing pieces. Yes I said that. Anyways enjoy, and sorry you can't see the type that clearly, the photos are just from my point and shoot.

oh, also... if you look, the band on the left pages indicates where you are in the portfolio. it moves up and down and is in 10 different spots, because there were 10 projects in my portfolio. the second to last image shows how it works pretty well. lastly because I have been asked in the past, the portfolio book is made completely by me. the covers are made with binders board, fabulous book cloth from Butterfly Book Binding, and end sheets i made myself - aka my own pattern printed out for them. bookmaking skills have really come in handy this year.

this evening my friend :: Eric Herrmann :: helped me with his awesome photography skills. we reshot most of the work in my portfolio, all on black. this is the first time i have really photographed all my work, well at least the pieces i want in my portfolio. there were a few things i didn't photograph because it will show better as a digital file, mostly posters. anyways here are some of the shots of my work and the first real appearance of the Obama book and spreads of The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo.

soo... most people that know me, know i have a thing for books. i prefer the ones with pictures, but reading is ok every once and a while. my love for books has led me to pursue the publishing world. currently i am learning that it never hurts to try, in this case, the bar can never be set too high. i have being lucky and gotten to visit : chronicle books : twice now because of the Art and Design department at Cal Poly. i have to say they have the most beautiful workspaces of all the studios i have been to. they have this fabulous lounge space with furniture i dream to have in my own space someday, also being there are books everywhere. being surrounded by awesome books and designers all day, um, hello,- sign me up! so i did just that, signed myself up aka submitted my portfolio to Chronicle Books for the Publishing Group Fellowship. i was very torn, because the industrial designer position sounded very cool too, but alas I stuck with what i know. i have some really high hopes, mostly because i am in love with the final presentation. i was really hoping to at least be a little different, and by the look on the receptionists face when i dropped it off, i did just that. she flashed me a smile and had this look of "this is a little different" or maybe she was confused and thought i was delivering a postal package. anyways - i like it and it shows me. me in a box, inside a book if you will. so now i sit and wait. i would love an interview and i would love the job, but lets shoot for an interview first. keep your fingers crossed!

its a sad day, but obviously there was someone better. i do have to say my portfolio layout and work has been much improved since i sent my portfolio to Pixar. so here is to next year and a fourth try. i will never give up, because you always have to have a dream and Pixar you are mine. someday. someday.

where do the portfolios go after being looked at. what dumpster do they end up in because my poor, gold book doesn't deserve such a future. i want it back! so Pixar where do they go, is there a vault? a special room?

when you are a graphic designer, your non-design friends always think you (the designer) work will for free. (this really applies to students) "will you design a poster please for my club... can you make me a logo... can you design a website." sorry to say, i usually don't even have time for my own special projects. however i made an exception. last november i was able to attend the pack expo in chicago with the industrial technology department. they even gave all the students who attended the large expo/conference money to cover most of the trip. so because of all that, i helped out the poly pack club. it's a pretty simple poster designed to advertise the event. part of the simplicity was due to the quick turn around time and lack of information provided during the process. it was a learning experience, because the group is not a typical client.

So a lot has been going on here. Not only is my work currently in the Student Show in the Cal Poly Art and Design Department, but my work is also in slightly BOOKISH at the Robert E. Kennedy Library, Learning Commons 2nd floor and Rm. 409 on the Cal Poly campus. The exhibition’s goals are to promote the library’s fine printing and graphic arts collection and demonstrate how book art is incorporated into Cal Poly’s curriculum. Work on display will include local presses and artists, current student (thats me!) and faculty work, work by alumni, and printing ephemera and artifacts from the Shakespeare Press Museum at Cal Poly.

I was very excited to find out I had been included in the show and even more excited that out of all the books, some how a little blurb about my book was included in an article promoting the show in the new times.

“It’s hard to showcase something that it’s hard to define,” acknowledged Trujillo. “These exceed the vision of what a book is.” Some have no text whatsoever, as in the case of a wallet filled with Morton’s salt that mimics the sound of rain. Many expand and contract, accordion-style. Binding might consist of a make-up compact, apron, or vintage python skin. Each book is cradled in its own box, buffered, acid-free, and often custom-built. The department possesses more than 700 such books, an estimated 10 percent of which will be included in the exhibit.

Soo I have to brag! Mosty because my senior project, "The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo" took over my life and I am very proud of the final project.

Anyways to the fabulous news, drum roll please... I won Best in Graphic Design for "The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo" in the Annual Juried Student Exhibition at Cal Poly. I have to say I was super excited! I have gotten work into the show previously throughout the last three years, but this year was the best.

So if you are in San Luis and want to check out my piece, the show will be up until May 1st.

so as many of my readers know, i have a dream to some day work for Pixar Animation Studios. so again this year I am knocking on their door! After finishing the toughest quarter of my life in school, which included many all nighters, very little sleep, and no social life, I took on one more thing... handmaking my crazy portfolio book just for Pixar. It took me about 4 days of finding all the files I needed, lots of formatting and a spur of the moment photoshoot, but I got it done and the book arrived at Pixar yesterday at 9:10am.

This is my shout out to you Pixar! This is my third year applying for an internship and I am hoping this is the year, because there is a Graphic Art position! I am hoping it is destiny calling, because I am graduating and my dream job finally is up for grabs. So, hey Pixar, I am the one you want, I will work my hardest everyday, please give me a shot? At least an interview? The portfolio, (that I sadly will never see again) is me in a book, hopefully it was enough to knock your socks off.

Oh and yes, I know the book is intense, but it shows I am driven and it was supposed to be overwhelming, maybe a little crazy is good. Shows I want it!

so, today i turned it all in... well all of senior project stuff at least. it has been a rough week here on johnson but, getting better. took the afternoon off and picked up my mess caused by the making of "the unconventional oddities of san luis obispo." anyways, i just wanted to share a few pics. i will post more later, but don't have time to photoshop them all now. signing off and back to work tomorrow to finish another book/poster thing. check back later for that.

The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo is a quirky guide to unique findings in the city of San Luis Obispo, CA. The book is a look through my eyes, as you are lead from place to place discovering things that many see as mundane or never take the time to stop and just look. If you are in the area and find more oddities let me know!

Also, there are 25 handmade books (still in production). The plan is to have another edition made, but not made by hand so my cost of production is cheeper. Enjoy.

so. everyone knows my distaste of papyrus. no not paper, the typeface. although by Marian Bantjes qualifications, because it only has one weight, it could be classified as a font. ok people, so other than a few typefaces, you shouldn't use the ones that come with Microsoft Word! With that being said, at this time the only people that I won't get mad at is the state of Montana, i'll let you slide, you're rustic and such. i will let you have Papyrus, but thats really because i don't think I will be back to visit for a while and maybe you will be over it by then. ( it is everywhere there! jam jars, signs, it's used in yellowstone national park!) But, to all the others... stop with the papyrus. please.

anyways. enough of my yapping.
this was all brought on because over this quarter tyler has being studying for a packaging class and his teacher is having a love affair with papyrus. the power point is covered with it, like every slide. ugh. so on that note, check out these crimes his teacher commits weekly.

soo... we all showed up for type class today and the plan had changed. today was pick a word from a jar, and create a typeface out of found objects based on the word. our groups word was "warm" and after brainstorming we came up with oatmeal! so here it is after shooting the letters. i'll post after we finish the second part making a haiku with the letters.

the class got a lucky break and although the poster were "due" wednesday, we got one more round. which was just a nice way of telling us we all weren't finished and they still kinda sucked. anyways today was the due date and they are all done this time. as for my feelings on my project, i knew i wasn't finished with it on wednesday. there was still things that bugged me and i didn't get enough time to step back and not really think about it. so i didn't think about it for about 24hrs and with a little help i made some tweeks, made some things "pop" a little more, added a dash of legibility ( which was cause by my love for hairline type ) and ta-da. complete. i am actually pretty happy with it, except for tickets, something me still irks about it. the color is my favorite. im gonna have to make up some more quirky colors, as my teacher put it. anyways here is the final, i think i might just kern the type in a few more places and then its done, done, like i put it in the portfolio, no more fixing, done. oh if only things were ever really done done. im sure i will find something. oh, and scroll down to see its evolution.

just an early comp of my poster for orchesis. its a project in my advanced type class, as charmaine likes to remind us... I am working on my Senior Project to get the heck outta Cal Poly, and I need a little help.

I’ll try to make this short and sweet.

The Project:

The goal of my project is to compile and illustrate and short book titled, “The Unconventional Oddities of San Luis Obispo.” Basically a travel guide to the Downtown area of San Luis Obispo, possibly the whole city and outlying areas. This would not be your average guide. My guide will be a detailed adventure to the side of our famed “SLO” town that even some “SLOcals” may be unaware of. The guide will highlight the many quirky objects, architectural details, history, and secrets that sadly get overlooked by many. Now is their time to shine!

Currently I have set my bar at making the book at least 64 pages but I would love to make it bigger. The only way I can do that is with a little luck and help from friends. So that’s why I have asked for your help.

So, What I Need From You:

What fun, slightly (or completely) not normal things in the City of San Luis Obispo you know of. I would love to site everyone in the book that helps me, let me know if you don’t want to be sited. I will need...

Your full name (how I can reach you too... This of course will not be released)
Brief description of the oddity
Where the “oddity” is (address or at least cross streets, please)

i would just like to say.... I have 2007, 2008, and now 2009 worth of blog posts! although I haven't posted that much. ah, but guess what, my new years resolution ( for my blog ) is to post at least once a week. i have enough going on now with senior project, advanced type, freelance stuff, being a junior designer at iiiDESiGN, building my portfolio, revamping my .com and getting close to graduating. see a lot going on.

so with that bring on the new year and some new opportunities.

ta-da! some new work too. this is a comp of my first project for advanced type with charmaine. the project was to combine three separate bodies of text ( chosen for us ) using what ever methods we choose. the only rules were that only one type family could be used ( the whole family could be used though, bold, demi, italic, etc. ) and the use of lines are aloud. my concept was to create two spaces one for the male and female voice, with the radio text acting as white noise and the coffee directions interrupting the females train of thought. so there you have it, check it out, and let me know your thoughts.

this was for a friend. he is a real salmon fisherman, from alaska and everything. fun little belly band that would go around a paper board box with the salmon inside. *the fish would be a die-cut so you could see the product. i am going to make a mock up to see if its worthy of the portfolio or not. ill post those once i get them done.

my final project for photoshop class.

its a combo of watercolors (tweaked for color palette), photos done in the studio (thanks eric and friends), and the my personal touch of illustrations to bring a little bit more personality to the final images. not gonna lie I still need some practice blending and cutting out people, i am gonna go back and work some more but these are the finals that i turned in. i printed them somewhat poster size (17x8 in). i would love to try this concept again in a more graphic way... will see.

sorry for being gone so long. i have been asked what has become of me... i am here to say, i am still alive. working hard and just very busy. i just got back from a trip to chicago with cal poly's industrial technology department to the pack expo. it was awesome every aspect of the packaging world: materials, machines, designers, suppliers. so much stuff it was crazy. the expo was monday through thursday, so much to take in. after the expo however, we got to explore the city. its pretty fabulous there, the weather even for being cold was such a nice change from this crazy warm november we are having in california. anyways, all and all, i am back. i will try to update much more often because i have got some little projects going on. for now i leave you with this cool graffiti art we came across in chicago.

its been a busy few weeks here in little Slo Town. i wish i could share with you what i have most recently been working on a lot but its a work project and so... i cant really share. i will post images if the work gets used though, so look for that soon or maybe never? as for what i have here, this is my first attempt at collage like this, lighting isnt perfect but i kinda like it that way. this was from a trip to yosemite right before school started. it was a great way to end the summer. thats all for now. gotta get back to work to put some more stuff up!

tyler and i fixed our bikes up the other weekend, which included a couple trips to Art's Cyclery. got some new tires for Ty and some break cables for me. we were in the shop for quite a bit while they put the new tires and tubes on for us, but that gave me a bunch of time to look around. of course i was drawn to bright colors and cool packaging and this was one of my favorites. simple design, but good graphics/color, good display of the product, and fun type. i almost bought the bike light just for the packaging, how nerdy am i?!?!

so currently I am doing something a little strange, but cool at the same time! I'm posting this from my snazzy new iPhone! Eekkk soo fun. (mom forgive me now for typos, I'll go back and fix them) so it was a good day yesterday a new toy which is helping me communicate better with everything going on here at i've gone graphic. I never thought they were something you really really needed, but I've now had it like 24 hours and would be extremely sad if I it was taken from me. Haha.

anyways enough about the dumb phone, I know.
So yesterday night I saw john mayor live at the midstate fair! so amazing. I'll try and post a video, I was very impressed with my little digital camera. after that long day of fun I worked a lot and also was able to finish the Berserker Cycle Design logo. still not sure about the snot green Adam, haha. anyways it's been a good week check back for pictures.

i didnt intentional pick these images because they both have a lot of green, but funny how that worked. anyways this post is just to share some fun things to look at. first off is the restaurant front made of old windows. almost every rectangular shape has a different style of old window, all come together to makes for very catchy curb appeal. (images taken in Sebastopol, CA of West Country Grill) the next set are off these really cool looking caterpillars that are found sometimes on tomato plants, known as "tomato hornworm." they look neat with the pattern and they can get really large, (found two really big ones today) but you want to get rid of them because they will eat your tomatos.... sooo not cool! so yeah we put ours in the green waste bin :(. *if you haven't noticed, we are growing tomatoes! tyler and i have 4 tomato plants (big ones) growing in the backyard.

maybe ill have to start having color theme'd posts?

hello all.

i know i have been away again for good amount of time. the sad part is i currently return with nothing. i learned first had the hardships of being a freelance designer since i was last here. i found out just because you design things for a client, (getting deep into the process aka almost having the whole identity completed) doesn't mean they can't say, "nah we changed our minds we are going to go with something else." meaning my fun designs i created ( posted in my previous post for "swag" ) aren't being used. which i am totally cool with cause i can use the ideas/styles another time, the coolest one wasn't even posted, but it will be eventually I am gonna rework it a little and maybe make some shirts with the mark. ill post it once i finish it up. so as that door closed i got a cool chance to work with a friend on a project he is working on. he has a company, Berserker Cycle Design, that i am designing the logo for and maybe some other stuff. will see. i will also post those once the design gets finalized. check back soon, i should have some fun stuff up in a week or sooo. its summer soo posting is a little slower, sorry design'y friends who read this expecting more.

this summer got off to a slow start, aka i wasn't design' much outta the gates, but everything is moving along now.

so, i took a little "vaycay" from this place. not on purpose but more because i have been designing less this quarter. meaning there wasn't much to post about. as for a recap... i saw the last of the posters i designed while at ASI. i should be starting with iiidesign soon, i have two more finals and then i am done with this year. i learned i suck at chemistry and i can't wait to get started on my way crazy idea for a hot pink alumminum potfolio case. will see how it goes, but i have a game plan.

as for the way this blog thing is gonna work from now on is gonna change a bit, for the better i think. haha.
i have been told (far to many times) that i like to talk... a lot. at least it isn't about dumb stuff, but i really have become interested in the design world in search of inspiration, see what others are doing, im also interested in the enviromental part of our world, so i like to talk about that. so those things might make an appearence from time to time. if you know me or are a regular buddy on iChat you know most likely know i surf the net a lot and find things. so i am going to share them with you here, on my blog. i like sharing, cause i am always up to learn something knew. so you are more then welcome to share anything you find with me too.

so, it's time to put the sadness and the fact that i will never see my mini portfolio ever again behind me. much has changed from the last post. i had an interview the same day i was turned down from pixar, by the end of the week i had an internship for the summer! it is with a little studio in town called iiidesign. i am very excited i think i will be able to learn alot there. as for taking the internship, that brought me to today my last day with asi. it was a great year there, so much fun to see things i designed all over campus. but it was time for a change and a move to refining and cleaning up my designs.

moving to now. i am taking a nice break from a lot of work, just working a little at apple and design' a lil' on the side. next project up is my best friend Jenn's graduation announcements. ill post them when i am done, check back after the weekend maybe?

sad news.

no wicked cool pixar internship for me. got my generic rejection email. my chin is up, this was the second time at "no," but I have already begin to plan how to blow them outta the water. i am thinking maybe just mail myself as my portfolio instead. that way i would at least finally get inside the gate and look around. anyways, i am not even mad or that disappointed, because i know it was a long shot, but i just really wish i could get my portfolio back.... it was sweet!

ok, soo i know i haven't posted in a while.
i have just getting my quarter in order. as for a little update on whats going on...

1. I am working with Cuesta's English department on their Literary Annual Tellus. I am just finishing up this weekend and then it will be sent off to the printers Tuesday morning. This will be my first heavy text book! For all the Cal Poly people it is Cuesta's version of Cp's Byzantium.

2. I am finishing up the marketing for ASI's "May Mayhem" aka the UU on crack. It is similar to the "Dusk 'til Dawn" event I designed the marketing for earlier in the year. The Mayhem concept was about things going in every direction, lots of arrows. (see below)

3. I love number 3! That's because #3 is my side projects. haha. I am not gonna spill the beans yet. These projects are still in the concept phase, but I teaming up with friend and working on some stuff. I want it to be a surprise, but as for the medium we are going to explore with photography and illustrations. Lots of movement and minimal color, you will just have to wait and see.

the break is over.
school started again. should be an interesting quarter because i don't have any "design" classes. i am however, in a cool packaging (IT 330) class. basically i get to play with packaging machines and make cool things. i am on the path to that packaging minor. now i just have to get over physics and its smooth sailing... keep your fingers crossed.

anyways i am getting to posting some work from the end of the quarter. knocked up is first to come this week.
i am gonna try and post something tomorrow and later in the week too because i still have Juno ( w. tic tacs), salt book final pictures, holes book, oddities of slo book with final cover. so check back later.

if you know me, hopefully by now you know i have a "luv" for pixar.
i look forward to the day when one of their new movies come out to see how cool the the movie looks. i am kinda silly, i have to watch movies i really like twice. the 1st time: watch movie and drool at how cool stuff looks and think about how some of the cool stuff is done. programing etc. also study some details, look for fun things. kinda pay attention to the other regular stuff all movie. the 2nd time: watch the movie, just to watch and enjoy. i can't help from doing it. i get really sucked into its cool graphics etc. the first time!

so I am only posting this to remind others that sometimes it is good to take a day off. yesterday was my first day off since the quarter began in january. anyways, it was wonderful, went and got coffee and it was a little rainy. good hang out day. looked for books and just hung out. i finally got to start my new book "the learners" by chip kidd. so far so good.

one good quote i liked so far...

its been a busy week. made book for monday. made student show card for tuesday + coming up with idea for final book arts project (idea still sorta TBD). anyways. but the student show is coming up and it is something i have started to look forward to the last couple years. information will be coming soon about that, but... drum roll please..... i finished the card. well at least i think so. i just have to go show the gallery one more time tomorrow after making sure the card was tightened up. the final product is below. i tried something a little different with a little inspiration.

oh illustration how i hate and love you.
this little gem, was a little book/story. in my case, an adventure for my illustration. i attacked my project in an "unconventional" (my favorite word of the moment, along with "mundane") way. the project, at first, was like pulling teeth because I was frustrated and unsure of what to do. i luckily got some inspiration and then found a way to mesh my design-y-ness and my doodling style. over all, i was very happy with how the project turned out. i think i might make an edition of this book over spring break, so let me know if you would like one.

so i am setting my bar high, which most of you already know i tend to do, and apply to PIXAR for an internship. this is my beautiful - one of a kind, never to be repeated - mini (5x7) portfolio that will never be given back. sadly. i whipped up the little box and now i want to keep it. yikes. but, sometimes it is better to make something that will give the extra "oooo...." factor. keep your fingers crossed, and maybe i'll get lucky and at least get an interview. here's hoping the box will show i can think out of the box?

so i had told my mom i would make a christmas Moxie, and that didn't happen. so, for the next holiday, she was gonna be glam' for my 22nd birthday which is coming up. but instead, something a lil' more fun. and for everyone, some valentine's day fun. its been a work in progress, over the last week - working here and there, but brought to you by I've Gone Graphic, is Moxie as "The Queen of Hearts." you are more than welcome to download and print her out to make your own festive valentine's desk buddy. enjoy.

my source of inspiration. so new project in the works. an edition of 10 books with a 2 week time frame. details: you must use a label from a food or beverage, use all the contents of the label, but you can use it as a place to start. also the books can be no larger then 5.5inch x 5.5inch. it sounds like a lot but i am very excited about this project. check back for updates. i hope to put up some pics of the progress soon.

just as a follow up on my perez-ness. yes he came to cal poly. it was fabulous and so much fun. he talked about himself and what he has done in life and how he got to where he is now. don't worry he still talked gossip. got my picture w/ the man of the hour, although sadly it wasn't that great, because my camera sucks and its time to get a new one after tonight's performance. my fun moments.

1. Perez signed my poster.
2. He loved the buttons and said so in front of the whole crowd of like 800+ people, before he knew who made them.
3. The best moment though.... Seeing the 500 buttons I designed being worn by almost everybody. First time I have seen so many people with something I designed. so, so, sooo cool to me. now if only some how, he gave props on his blog. how cool would that be especially since he gets 7-8 Million hits a day!?!

so i am gonna blab now.
i bought a letterpress to go with the 27 typefaces i received for christmas. it is a glorious little machine and i cant wait to ink up and take it for another test drive. the first run was an experience, it isn't easy as you can see my ink isn't evenly distributed. check back for more prints and the adventures me and "tink tink" (yes, my little kelsey press already has a name) go through over the next few months.

i have been gone for a while now, but guess what? i am back and ready to get my crafty-ness and flashy-ness on this new quarter at CP. be on the watch for fun posts of progress in book arts, illustration, and FLASH. this is my quarter i hope to really push the limits and really see in what new ways i can use my graphic design skills. check back soon and look for a post on monday of my fabulous new purchase that i can't wait to use. i've already blabbed on and on about it in the non-digital world.

Moxie - The Readymech

its been a long time, but remember my "readymech" i talked about a long long time ago, well she is finally up to be looked at. I was cleaning up the computer and final came across the file. hope you'll enjoy and just as a recap. we had to make flat templets that could be cut out and made into a character or creature. mine was inspired by my friend Lauren who is off in Italy for the year, but it later evolved into me w/ a twist. i will get around to posting my package project soon i need to redo some of the photos, but maybe ill give a sneak peak of what all the printed stuff looks like if i get time tonight.

p.s. the photo of moxie all together is bad, still need to put her actually in a light tent and have a shoot with her the right way.

It's offical ya'll, the ASI Winter activites and Events guide is done! it went off to the printers today (Jano) should get the proof back thursday and then we should see them in hand sometime next week. can't wait and soo glad its finally finished. its a bound up guide with a tri-fold and roll fold.

im living life at a fast pace... aka designing at a fast pace.
there has been a lot to do lately.... and the state of mind of going graphic surely has been reached a few times. there have been tears, there was design overload, but stuff is getting done.

here is a sneak peak of how this poster is going along for the ASI Events and Activities Guide. It goes to print a week from today and there is still work to be done, along with some package design!

i have an interesting idea of making packaging out of used fabrics. right now i am experimenting with a bag idea, but i am going to work on creating boxes tomorrow. there would also be a tag or some kind of a wrap that would have the product name, etc. still working on those details. check back later for the development of this project.

the life of a designer never stops, not even on the weekend. these are just some fun sketches i drew yesterday. pretty much just doodles i am very into patterns right now so just experimenting with shapes and such. then there are also a few little logos that i did really really quickly for a friend as pro-bono. they are simple but i didn't have too much time to design or time to do it around all my other work.

so this evening i had specific work to do for class, asi, the gallery, etc. and while doing it all... i think i came up with some cool little things. you'll see illustration is starting to show up alot in my work now.

the first is a concept for my new package project. basically we can choose to package anything we want as long as it has three different types of packaging. so, my idea fits me pretty well if you know, i am using my funky vintage, eclectic jewlery to create a made up jewlery collection called, "i found it yesterday." thanks mom. so the idea is to packag the jewlery pieces (earings, necklaces, broaches) in reusable fabric pouches or very cool, very custom boxes coverd in vintage fabric with a latch to keep the box closed. the weird fabric swatches i found will be posted later.

the collage with the blue background is an image i created for a potential poster for the "asi events and activities guide." its something different, but be just a little to out of the box though... will see. then the draws below are for another potential idea for the same project. sorta two different looks.

i smugged out photos i had put in, my digital file had issues so i only have the hard copy now. sad. anyways so yeah new stuff w/ more to come soon as well hopefully a good more chunk by saturday.

so i dont have any images yet of the new project i am working on, but they will come soon. just to give you a teaser... ASI (my design job) puts out a calender of events at the beginning of every quarter here at Cal Poly. it is known more now as the "ASI Events and Activities Guide," it's a cool project because one side is a poster and the other is a bunch of text... so you get to show your type skills as well as your fun design side too for the poster. i am very excited about the project and hopefully i get to complete the project without it being given to another designer. i'll post sketches and proofs as soon as i get out of the "ideation" phase.

so i have finally gotten back to blogging today. it was a busy week last week. i have been working alot on "fizzz'tails" which is due tomorrow so i will upload the final piece hopefully tomorrow afternoon with comps of the total package.

onto the news for today! i just wrapped up two big projects i have been working on.

Project#1: the print campaign for dusk 'til dawn, which is this big on campus event at cal poly through my job at ASI. it was a sweet project because i got to come up with the theme of the event, which was going to be like a freak show - coney island-ish. that plan was a lil' to much for the staff so we took the direction of a circus theme. i am pretty happy with the outcome: the drawing is all mine!

This first image is a large format 40x48" poster.

These last two images are the front and back of a 4x6" card that was put students mailboxes who live on campus in the dorms.

Project #2 The gallery card for UAG: The University Art Gallery's upcoming exhibit. This card is mailed to anybody on the gallery's mailing list to inform the public about the currect work that will be shown at the UAG. (This is my other job! You will soon notice I am crazy and do a lot of outside work from my classes. You can only become a better designer by pushing yourself to do extra work is my thoughts!)

so this quarter I am taking a package design class. very spiffy if you ask me. I have really begun to like it because you have to think beyond the flat aspect of design, you have to think about how the final project will look on the product or package. the assignment is to create your own beverage. it can be anything from tea, soda, energy drink, juice, etc. my take on the project is to create a non-alcholic drink resembling the flavors of a mimosa mixed w/ peach. The line/brand name of the drink would be called Fizzz'Tails w/ this one drink called a "Southern Belle." I would like to have more then one drink in the line, other names would be "New York Minute," "Nothern Light," and "Left Coast Breeze." More to come soon as the project developes.

so I am aware that it has been a while, but I am now taking the time to sit down and post the things I have been meaning to. these are all images from my sketchbook. just doodles and some experimentation with collage at the end.

the two sketchs of the girls were inspiration for my "Ready Mech" a project I had to do from my package design class.

so my boyfriend tyler is taking a jewlery class, so I was inspired to try and draw rings for ideas for him and then the bottom are ideas for a pendent using a pearl which he is acutally going to make!

Hey all. So this new blogging thing is slightly new to me, but don't you worry I am sure I will be addicted real quick. As for my self I am a Graphic Design student at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly for short). I am currently in my 4th year, but not graduating yet, I am saving that for next year.
